Understanding the Santa Clarita Valley
The City of Santa Clarita was incorporated in 1987 from four existing communities: Valencia, Saugus, Newhall, and Canyon Country. Together they form California's third-largest city by area in Los Angeles County.
The broader Santa Clarita Valley also includes unincorporated communities like Stevenson Ranch (west of I-5) and Castaic (at the Valley's northern edge). These areas share school districts and community resources with the city but are governed by LA County.
All six communities share access to the William S. Hart Union High School District, the Valley's extensive trail system, and the SCV's strong safety record. The differences lie in housing age, price points, walkability, and local character.
