Why Study in Monterey County?

Monterey County punches well above its size in higher education. It's home to a flagship CSU campus on the former Fort Ord coastline, the nationally significant Naval Postgraduate School, the globally oriented Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and two of the Central Coast's strongest community colleges in Monterey Peninsula College and Hartnell. Students here learn against the backdrop of Monterey Bay and the Salinas Valley — with access to marine science, agriculture technology, defense research, and international studies that few regions can match, all in one of California's most beautiful coastal settings.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

California Grants & Aid

California offers some of the most generous financial aid in the nation. Here's what you need to know to minimize your cost and maximize your opportunities at Monterey County's colleges and universities.

The Most Important Step: File Your FAFSA by March 2

Nearly all financial aid — federal grants, Cal Grants, UC grants, the California College Promise Grant, and institutional scholarships — requires a completed FAFSA (or CADAA for eligible undocumented students). File early and don't miss California's March 2 priority deadline. Many families leave thousands of dollars on the table by not filing.

Cal Grants

Deadline: March 2 each year (FAFSA/CADAA + verified GPA required)

California's primary state-funded financial aid program. Cal Grants are free money — they do not need to be repaid. Available to California residents attending qualifying colleges and universities. Covers tuition and fees at CSU and UC campuses, and provides a fixed grant toward private and community college costs.

Eligibility: California resident, enrolled at qualifying CA college, meet income and GPA requirements, file FAFSA or CADAA by March 2 deadline.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Deadline: October 1 annually; March 2 for Cal Grant priority

The FAFSA is the gateway to all federal and most state financial aid, including Cal Grants, Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study. Every student should file, regardless of income level.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens. Must be enrolled or accepted at a qualifying institution.

California Dream Act Application (CADAA)

Deadline: October 1 annually; March 2 for Cal Grant priority

The CADAA serves as the state financial aid application for undocumented students who qualify under AB540. It opens access to Cal Grants, institutional aid, and some UC/CSU grant programs.

Eligibility: AB540-eligible students attending qualifying California colleges.

California College Promise Grant (Community Colleges)

Deadline: Apply anytime via the college; FAFSA/CADAA recommended

Waives per-unit enrollment fees for eligible California residents at community colleges like Monterey Peninsula College and Hartnell College — making the first two years of higher education dramatically more affordable.

Eligibility: California residents enrolled at a CA community college who meet income or benefit eligibility.

UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan

Deadline: File FAFSA by March 2

UC's guarantee that families earning under $80,000 per year will have systemwide tuition and fees fully covered by scholarships and grants. Relevant for Monterey County students transferring to a UC campus.

Eligibility: California residents with household income under $80,000, enrolled at a UC campus, FAFSA filed by deadline.

Middle Class Scholarship (California)

Deadline: File FAFSA/CADAA by March 2

California's newest financial aid program provides tuition coverage for middle-income students attending CSU or UC campuses — including CSU Monterey Bay. Designed for families earning up to $217,000.

Eligibility: California residents at UC or CSU, household income up to $217,000, asset ceiling applies.

Where to Search for Scholarships

Beyond state and federal aid, each institution offers its own scholarship programs. Always check the school's official financial aid and scholarship pages first — these are often the largest and most accessible opportunities.
