Pasadena's Top Universities
A definitive guide to Pasadena's higher-education ecosystem — from Caltech's world-class science and engineering and ArtCenter's globally renowned design programs, to Pasadena City College's 30,000-student community-college anchor and the city's specialized graduate, design, theology, music, and medical schools.
Why Study in Pasadena?
Pasadena punches dramatically above its weight in higher education. The city is home to the California Institute of Technology — one of the world's top 10 universities — alongside ArtCenter College of Design (a globally elite design school with a direct exchange relationship with Caltech), Pasadena City College (one of California's largest and most respected community colleges, serving 30,000+ students each semester), Fuller Theological Seminary, Pacific Oaks College, Providence Christian College, the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, Los Angeles College of Music, and Saybrook University. That breadth — STEM, design, theology, medicine, music, community-college access, and graduate psychology, all inside a single mid-size California city — makes Pasadena one of the most unusually rich academic ecosystems in the western United States.

#6 National Universities (U.S. News 2025) — #10 in the World (QS 2026)

Ranked #6 in U.S. News Best National Universities (2025 edition) and #10 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026, Caltech operates a famously small, intensely research-focused 124-acre suburban campus in the heart of Pasadena. With just 1,023 undergraduate students in fall 2023, Caltech maintains a 3-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio that is unmatched in American research universities. Caltech manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), operates major observatories including Palomar and the W. M. Keck Observatory, and counts dozens of Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners among its faculty and alumni. Caltech is the gravitational center of Pasadena's globally significant science-and-technology innovation ecosystem.

California Grants & Aid
California offers some of the most generous financial aid in the nation. Here's what you need to know to minimize your cost and maximize your opportunities.
The Most Important Step: File Your FAFSA by March 2
Nearly all financial aid — federal grants, Cal Grants, UC grants, and institutional scholarships — requires a completed FAFSA (or CADAA for eligible undocumented students). File early and don't miss California's March 2 priority deadline. Many families leave thousands of dollars on the table by not filing.
Cal Grants
California's primary state-funded financial aid program. Cal Grants are free money — they do not need to be repaid. Available to California residents attending qualifying universities. Covers tuition and fees at CSU and UC campuses, and provides a fixed grant toward private university tuition.
Eligibility: California resident, enrolled at qualifying CA college, meet income and GPA requirements, file FAFSA or CADAA by March 2 deadline.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
The FAFSA is the gateway to all federal and most state financial aid, including Cal Grants, Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study. Every student should file, regardless of income level.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens. Must be enrolled or accepted at a qualifying institution.
California Dream Act Application (CADAA)
The CADAA serves as the state financial aid application for undocumented students who qualify under AB540. It opens access to Cal Grants, institutional aid, and some UC/CSU grant programs.
Eligibility: AB540-eligible students attending qualifying California colleges.
UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan
UC's guarantee that families earning under $80,000 per year will have systemwide tuition and fees fully covered by scholarships and grants. Many UC students from middle-income families pay zero tuition.
Eligibility: California residents with household income under $80,000, enrolled at a UC campus, FAFSA filed by deadline.
Federal Pell Grant
The largest federal grant program for undergraduate students with financial need. Pell Grants do not need to be repaid and can be used at any qualifying institution.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. Maximum award varies by year.
Middle Class Scholarship (California)
California's newest financial aid program provides up to 40% tuition coverage for middle-income students attending CSU or UC campuses. Designed for families earning up to $217,000.
Eligibility: California residents at UC or CSU, household income up to $217,000, asset ceiling applies.
Where to Search for Scholarships
Beyond state and federal aid, each university offers its own scholarship programs. Always check the school's official financial aid and scholarship pages first — these are often the largest and most accessible opportunities.
