Thomas Aquinas College is a small, intensely focused Catholic liberal arts college tucked into the foothills above Santa Paula in eastern Ventura County. Founded in 1971, the college is best known for its all-required Great Books curriculum, in which every student reads the same texts in the same order over four years — from Aristotle and Euclid to Aquinas, Newton, and Einstein. There are no majors, no electives, and no lecture courses; instruction is conducted entirely through small Socratic discussions led by tutors. The college is anchored by the dramatic Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel, one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Ventura County, and the campus enjoys a serene rural setting in the Topatopa foothills.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

California Grants & Aid

California offers some of the most generous financial aid in the nation. Here's what Ventura County students need to know to minimize cost and maximize opportunities — at CSU Channel Islands, Cal Lutheran, Thomas Aquinas, and the VCCCD community colleges.

The Most Important Step: File Your FAFSA by March 2

Nearly all financial aid — federal grants, Cal Grants, CSU and UC grants, the California College Promise Grant for VCCCD students, and institutional scholarships — requires a completed FAFSA (or CADAA for eligible undocumented students). File early and don't miss California's March 2 priority deadline. Many Ventura County families leave thousands of dollars on the table by not filing.

Cal Grants

Deadline: March 2 each year (FAFSA/CADAA + verified GPA required)

California's primary state-funded financial aid program. Cal Grants are free money — they do not need to be repaid. Available to California residents attending qualifying universities. Covers tuition and fees at CSU and UC campuses (including CSU Channel Islands) and provides a fixed grant toward private university tuition (including Cal Lutheran and Thomas Aquinas).

Eligibility: California resident, enrolled at qualifying CA college, meet income and GPA requirements, file FAFSA or CADAA by March 2 deadline.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Deadline: October 1 annually; March 2 for Cal Grant priority

The FAFSA is the gateway to all federal and most state financial aid, including Cal Grants, Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study. Every Ventura County student should file, regardless of income level.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens. Must be enrolled or accepted at a qualifying institution.

California Dream Act Application (CADAA)

Deadline: October 1 annually; March 2 for Cal Grant priority

The CADAA serves as the state financial aid application for undocumented students who qualify under AB540. It opens access to Cal Grants, institutional aid, and some UC/CSU grant programs — relevant to many students in Ventura County's Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

Eligibility: AB540-eligible students attending qualifying California colleges.

California College Promise Grant (formerly BOG Fee Waiver)

Deadline: Apply any time — automatic with FAFSA/CADAA for eligible students

Waives the per-unit enrollment fees at all California community colleges, including Ventura College, Moorpark College, and Oxnard College. The single most important aid program for Ventura County community-college students.

Eligibility: California residents at a California community college meeting income or need-based criteria.

Federal Pell Grant

Deadline: File FAFSA as early as possible

The largest federal grant program for undergraduate students with financial need. Pell Grants do not need to be repaid and can be used at any qualifying Ventura County institution.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. Maximum award varies by year.

Middle Class Scholarship (California)

Deadline: File FAFSA/CADAA by March 2

California's newest financial aid program provides up to 40% tuition coverage for middle-income students attending CSU campuses such as CSU Channel Islands. Designed for families earning up to $217,000.

Eligibility: California residents at UC or CSU, household income up to $217,000, asset ceiling applies.

Where to Search for Scholarships

Beyond state and federal aid, each Ventura County institution offers its own scholarship programs. Always check the school's official financial aid and scholarship pages first — these are often the largest and most accessible opportunities.
