Financial Aid & Scholarships

California Grants & Aid

California offers some of the most generous financial aid in the nation. Here's what Santa Barbara County students need to know to minimize cost and maximize opportunity.

The Most Important Step: File Your FAFSA by March 2

Nearly all financial aid — federal grants, Cal Grants, UC Blue & Gold, and institutional scholarships at UCSB, SBCC, Westmont, and Hancock — requires a completed FAFSA (or CADAA for eligible undocumented students). File early and don't miss California's March 2 priority deadline.

Cal Grants

Deadline: March 2 each year (FAFSA/CADAA + verified GPA required)

California's primary state-funded financial aid program. Cal Grants are free money — they do not need to be repaid. Available to California residents attending qualifying universities. Covers tuition and fees at CSU and UC campuses (including UC Santa Barbara), and provides a fixed grant toward private university tuition at schools like Westmont.

Eligibility: California resident, enrolled at qualifying CA college, meet income and GPA requirements, file FAFSA or CADAA by March 2 deadline.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Deadline: October 1 annually; March 2 for Cal Grant priority

The FAFSA is the gateway to all federal and most state financial aid, including Cal Grants, Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study. Every Santa Barbara County student should file, regardless of income level.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens. Must be enrolled or accepted at a qualifying institution.

California Dream Act Application (CADAA)

Deadline: October 1 annually; March 2 for Cal Grant priority

The CADAA serves as the state financial aid application for undocumented students who qualify under AB540. It opens access to Cal Grants, institutional aid, and some UC/CSU grant programs — important for many SBCC, Hancock, and UCSB students.

Eligibility: AB540-eligible students attending qualifying California colleges.

UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan

Deadline: File FAFSA by March 2

UC's guarantee that families earning under $80,000 per year will have systemwide tuition and fees fully covered by scholarships and grants — including at UC Santa Barbara. Many UCSB students from middle-income California families pay zero tuition.

Eligibility: California residents with household income under $80,000, enrolled at a UC campus, FAFSA filed by deadline.

SBCC Promise & Hancock Promise

Deadline: Apply in the year of high school graduation; check program websites

Local promise programs that can make community college tuition-free for eligible local high school graduates. The SBCC Promise covers fees, books, and supplies for two years for eligible Santa Barbara South Coast graduates. The Hancock Promise covers the first year for eligible North County graduates.

Eligibility: Recent local high school graduates from served districts; full-time enrollment and FAFSA/CADAA filing typically required.

Federal Pell Grant

Deadline: File FAFSA as early as possible

The largest federal grant program for undergraduate students with financial need. Pell Grants do not need to be repaid and can be used at any qualifying Santa Barbara County institution — UCSB, SBCC, Westmont, or Hancock.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. Maximum award varies by year.

Middle Class Scholarship (California)

Deadline: File FAFSA/CADAA by March 2

California's financial aid program providing up to 40% tuition coverage for middle-income students attending CSU or UC campuses (including UC Santa Barbara). Designed for families earning up to $217,000.

Eligibility: California residents at UC or CSU, household income up to $217,000, asset ceiling applies.

Where to Search for Scholarships

Beyond state and federal aid, each Santa Barbara County school offers its own scholarship programs. Always check the school's official financial aid and scholarship pages first — these are often the largest and most accessible opportunities.
